Garage Door Repairs in Toronto can be a tricky problem, if you don’t know what part is not working or operating correctly then it the troubleshooting itself can be frustrating but we have some tips here to possibly help you figure out what garage door repair you are in the market for. We are a full service garage door repair company serving all of Toronto and the GTA including Scarborough, Etobicoke, North York, Downtown Toronto, and East York.

The Garage Door Isn’t Opening Properly Repair

Garage doors or overhead doors, whether they roll up in sections or swing up in one piece, operate on spring tension cable. The door moves on metal tracks on the garage walls, and a heavy spring or springs provide the power.   In most cases when the door doesn’t open easily, at home tune ups are fairly simple. Here are some helpful garage door repairs you can try at home.

Step One: Check the metal tracks inside the garage. Look at the mounting brackets that hold the tracks to the walls. If they’re loose, tighten the bolts or screws at the brackets.

Step Two: Check the tracks with a level to make sure they’re properly aligned. Horizontal tracks should slant slightly down toward the back of the garage; with roll-up doors, the vertical sections of track should be exactly plumb.

Step Three: Clean the tracks with concentrated household cleaner to remove dirt and hardened grease. Clean the rollers thoroughly, and wipe both tracks and rollers dry.

Step Four: Check for loose hardware, and tighten as needed. On swing-up doors, check the plates where the spring is mounted to be sure the screws are tight, and tighten any loose screws. On roll-up doors, check the hinges that hold the sections of the door together; tighten any loose screws, and replace any damaged hinges.

Don’t hesitate to call us at 1-877-903-6677 if you need help with any of the above steps.

Garage Door Repair if the Garage Door Isn’t Opening at All

If your door isn’t opening at all, it is most likely the torsion spring, at the center of the door, DO NOT TRY to repair it. The tension is so great that the spring could injure you. For doors with this type of spring, call a professional repair service. Call us today at 1-877-903-6677

A garage door is meant to cover the garage and protect your vehicles and equipments lying inside it. A door can be operated manually or via an automatic garage door opener.

Need For Lubrication

Whether your garage door is manual or mechanic, it requires periodic lubrication of its various parts that may get rusty over time. Lubricating springs, chains, hinges and rollers is utmost important to keep the door functional reliably for many years. You can use standard lubricating oil for the rusted parts of the door. Generally, manufacturers provide a manual that has all the specific instructions about how to care for the garage door and its opener.

You will need the following items to start the lubrication process:

  • Lubricating oil or silicone spray
  • A stool
  • Rags/cloths
  • Protection eyewear

Steps For Lubricating A Garage Door

Follow these four steps, when lubricating your garage door:

  • Get inside the garage door and close it. Look at all the moving parts of the door that you think require oiling – hinges, springs, chains, etc.
  • Clean the door parts that you will be lubricating such as springs, hinges and rollers of any dust, cobwebs that may have built up. Use a stool to reach those parts and clean the overhead track system and the rollers carefully.
  • After cleaning, spray a small amount of lubricating oil directly onto the springs, chains and other moving parts. Keep the door halfway open and repeat the process. This is necessary to ensure that all the lubricating oil reaches all the moving parts of the door. Open and close the door a few times to let the oil begin lubrication of the rusted moving parts. Use more lubricant till all the parts are properly lubricated. Clean away any oil that drips down with a clean cloth.
  • Reach the upper garage door track area with the help of a stool. Spray some lubricant oil onto the rollers that are attached to the track and on the springs that operate the opening system. Open and close the door a few times to let the lubricant spread all over the moving parts. Wipe clean any dripping oil.

Finally, a word of caution. Make sure you wear protective glasses during the lubrication process as oil may spray back and damage your eyes. Also, avoid lubricating the door tracks, simply lubricate the rollers. You can use a soft cloth to clean the door tracks, if necessary.

Keeping garage doors lubricated will help them function effectively and for longer. Make sure you check the functioning of your garage door periodically. Keep an eye on its moving parts and if you find any faulty part, get it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

At Promaster Garage Doors & Windows, our professionals are skilled to handle any kind of garage door repair, replacement and installation job in a timely and efficient manner.

The word “garage” comes from “garer” which is a French term for “to shelter,” an appropriate description for all those who use their garage to shelter their car, their workshop, or simply store their overflowing household junk.

As the car found its way into society, so did the need for a place to store it. Cars were earlier parked next to the horses in the carriage house and the car owners in those days were usually of upper class than most so, having a fancy new car smell like horse manure was a big no-no!

The first garages used to look a lot like our modern-day parking lots, but only on a single level. People concluded that if they were able to store more than one horse in a barn, then perhaps they could store multiple cars in a similar structure. This system worked fine until about 1910, when there too many cars emerged for the garages to accommodate.

The carriage house could have worked great before, if only they could kiss goodbye those stinky horses. And that led to the creation of the garage, as we know it today. Their built was simple and, of course, had a door, because on of the primary purposes was to safeguard the car from the elements. The door was a double door which was attached to the garage with strap hinges that opened outwards. These doors were vulnerable to heavy wear and tear with the hinges creaking, screws bending and from eventually falling out being open and closed almost everyday. Also, if there were snow present on the ground, it would obstruct the doors so they could not be operated until the snow was shoveled around them. Then the sliding track doors were introduced, but that meant that the garage must be built at least double the width of the door.

Then an answer to the question of the century came with the invention of the overhead door by C.G. Johnson in 1921. This door was able to lift upwards, folding parallel to the garage ceiling. After five years, in 1926, Mr. Johnson also invented the very first electric garage door opener.

Garage Doors in 2014

Today the garage door designs are far more advanced and versatile than of a few decades ago. With their wide variety, diverse building materials and their enhanced service life, today’s overhead doors are designed to last for over 25 years or more with little service and low-maintenance – a requirement for every moving object in a home.

So, next time when you see that door that keeps your car safe, don’t forget where it came from.
