Garage doors or overhead doors, whether they roll up in sections or swing up in one piece, operate on spring tension cable. The door moves on metal tracks on the garage walls, and a heavy spring or springs provide the power.   In most cases when the door doesn’t open easily, at home tune ups are fairly simple. Here are some helpful garage door repairs you can try at home.

Step One: Check the metal tracks inside the garage. Look at the mounting brackets that hold the tracks to the walls. If they’re loose, tighten the bolts or screws at the brackets.

Step Two: Check the tracks with a level to make sure they’re properly aligned. Horizontal tracks should slant slightly down toward the back of the garage; with roll-up doors, the vertical sections of track should be exactly plumb.

Step Three: Clean the tracks with concentrated household cleaner to remove dirt and hardened grease. Clean the rollers thoroughly, and wipe both tracks and rollers dry.

Step Four: Check for loose hardware, and tighten as needed. On swing-up doors, check the plates where the spring is mounted to be sure the screws are tight, and tighten any loose screws. On roll-up doors, check the hinges that hold the sections of the door together; tighten any loose screws, and replace any damaged hinges.

Don’t hesitate to call us at 1-877-903-6677 if you need help with any of the above steps.

Garage Door Repair if the Garage Door Isn’t Opening at All

Pros and cons of having a wood garage door

Buying a new garage door with a huge variety is a very daunting task. You may confused with different material of overhead door. Every material has its own pros and cons. When you buy a door matched with your house structure, nothing can add a more curb appeal than a beautifully designed an overhead door.

There are different types of garage door material available in the market such as steel, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. If you are thinking about purchasing a wood garage door, nothing can better than a wood door to enhance the curb appeal of your house and add a traditional look.

Let’s have a look on some advantages and disadvantages of wood door to know if this is the best choice for you or not.

Pros

  1. Choice of material: A wooden door is made up of different types of timber. Different material is one of the most important things to consider when you are planning to buy a wood door. You can buy a door made with the same wood as your front door or window frames. The most popular material of wooden doors are cedar, fir, alder and redwood.
  2. Beautiful designs: These classic doors are available in plenty of beautiful designs and they are also authentic. Some popular designs are contemporary, carriage style and classic.
  3. Dent proof: If you have a steel or aluminum overhead door, you may get a dent on them. But wooden doors don’t have dent. If you are worrying about damaging your door, a timber door is a superior option due to its durability.

Cons

  1. High maintenance: These classic doors require a regular maintenance and repair. You must paint it every two or three years to keep it in a working condition and give a fresh look. Make sure you inspect a door on a regular basis for signs of rotting or other damages.
  2. Lack of insulation: If you want to install an insulated door, a wooden door may not be a good choice for you. Wooden garage doors are very heavy and solid, due to this reason they are not insulated and there is no way to add extra insulation.
  3. Expensive: These doors are more expensive than other materials. The price of the door is depending on the quality of material and construction. Except this, these doors are not durable in water. They get rot or damage very soon during a heavy rainy season.

Wooden doors are not different from other materials, but the main drawbacks are high cost and high maintenance. If you fail to give an attention on it, you may have to pay some extra bucks for a garage door repair professional. If your budget does not allows you, you can buy any other material. For any kind of information, you can make a call to Promaster Garage Doors and Windows.

Garage Door Replacement
When it comes to the age of garage doors, they generally don’t last more than 15 years on an average, provided they are well maintained throughout all these years. When the maintenance is ignored, garage doors start loosing their strength and durability. This leads to the garage door loosing many of its components who get worn or torn out due to lack of maintenance.

However, there are different factors also which can result in garage door’s poor working. So, if you find the following danger signs for your garage door, consider replacing it at the earliest as at times frequent repairs prove to be much costlier than a replacement.

6 Signs That Your Garage Door Needs Replacement

1. Your Garage Door Has a Lot of Loose Cords

If you find a lot of loose cords hanging off your garage door, it is a clear indication that you need a new garage door. Although, this is a fixable issue but it refers to the failing of your pulley system. So, getting a new door is recommended if you observe that the door is not closing or opening properly.

2. Your Garage Door is Too Slow to Open or Close

If your garage door is too slow to open or close, it is probably because of a faulty motor. Instead of getting the motor replaced again and again, it is suggested to replace the garage door completely.

3. Your Garage Door is Cracked

One of the biggest reason for a garage door replacement is a cracked garage door. This is a very common case and if you have a wooden garage door, you have no option but to replace it as fixing a cracked wooden door is very difficult and asks for consistent repairs.

4. Your Garage Door Has a Lot of Major Dents

When your garage door gets a lot of dents, it can pose a great risk to the safety and security of your garage. It can easily be used for a break-in. If you don’t want that your belongings or vehicle goes missing, replace the garage door at the earliest.

5. Your Garage Door Fails To Prevent Water Damage

If water is coming inside the garage, it means that your garage door has lost its ability to keep the water off from entering your garage. Its weather stripping is not strong enough to do so. Replacing it is a good idea but in case of old garage doors, replacing the door is a better option to avoid regular repair costs.

6. Your Garage Door Doesn’t Look Good Anymore

If you have a garage door that does not go with your home’s style or is too old to fit in this new and advanced world, consider replacing it. Not only you will get a lot of new features but also increase the security of your garage.

Protect Your Garage Door

Let’s face the fact- All things which are cheap, are cheap because they don’t have enough to offer on the plate. Your garage door is no exception when it comes to buying your dream door.

Garage doors have various features and components which make it stand tall against all problems and operate hassle free. This requires only one thing i.e. ‘quality’. Yes, it is the quality only which differs cheap garage doors from the standard ones.

They are cheap because they are built in a cost cutting way, which doesn’t ensure great functioning or safety. Getting a cheap garage door installed can invite a lot of trouble for you in the future.

Reason Why You Should Avoid Installing Cheap Garage Doors:-

  • Cheap Material & Parts

Now, please don’t be shocked to see this. You can’t expect a cheap garage door to use top quality parts. The material which is used to make the garage doors does not stand on the grounds of quality and has little to no strength.

It can hardly protect you from any external forces. Also, the parts are low in quality which can stop working anytime, creating trouble for you.

  • Poor Security

When something is made out of poor quality, it will hardly provide any security. Your cheap garage door is subject to a break-in and lots of wear and tear. Do you really want, anyone entering into your garage without your permission?

Think about all the stuff you have kept inside the garage and what if it gets stolen? A good quality garage door has high security features like steel or high quality wood preventing any kind of break in.

  • High Energy Bills

A cheap garage door is low on insulation and sealing. When a door uses uninsulated materials, a lot of heat energy goes inside the garage. Also, the sealings are not that tough and they fail to prevent entry of any heat or cold.

In summers, your garage door can really heat up inside making your HVAC unit work very hard to bring it down. This will definitely increase your energy bills and you thought you saved a lot of bucks by purchasing a cheap one!

  • Can Lead To Injury

When a cheap garage door doesn’t have enough security features, how will it be safe to use! The poor material used for the door has a tendency of wearing and tearing very fast.

This can make it fall directly on to someone! Even most of these doors have no auto reverse mechanism and can’t sense anything coming in their way. This can seriously injure your pet, kids and even your car!

  • Short Life!

When something is built out of low quality materials, how far it can go? This is the problem with cheap garage doors, they just don’t last long.

This will eventually lead you to spend more money on new garage door and its installation, apart from all the repair costs which came your way because of poor quality.

Do You What's The 'R-Value' of Your Garage Door?

If you have a garage door in your premises, you have probably come across the word “R-value”. Though, most of the people are aware of this R-value thing, but only a few understand its importance. They don’t know why they need to pay attention to it when selecting a garage door for their home. Here are a few reasons why you need to consider R-value of your door before buying it.

What is an R-value?

R-Value is a measure of thermal efficiency. Higher R-value means greater insulating properties of the door. Insulation materials equalize the temperature and stop the flow of heat. The garage doors with the higher R-value are more energy-efficient than other doors.

Some materials provide better insulation than others

There are some specific materials that provide better insulation than others. Polystyrene and polyurethane are the two most common forms of insulation used. They may appear similar, but have different protection levels.

Where polystyrene is inserted into garage door panels, leaving room for air to get in, polyurethane is sprayed into the door, which is more reliable. Since, the spray is bonded to the surface, it also keeps the outside noise from getting in, providing a quieter garage. Polyurethane provides much higher R-value.

R-value measurement

You can calculate the R-value if you know the material used in the fabrication of the door. Common building materials have pre-defined R-value. You can easily find them online and calculate the exact R-value.

Importance of R-value

What is the R-value of the door? This is the question that you must ask when shopping for a garage door. The R-value determines the efficiency of your door and how it will be at insulating your garage and home.

Keeping your garage warm all winter can break the bank. So, it is ideal to consider the doors with high R-value for the garage that are not used too often. R-value will maintain the inside temperature and can help save you a lot of money.

Higher is better

When it comes to R-value, higher is always better. But remember, it’s not the only factor to consider. Today polyurethane insulated garage doors offer an R-value of 12-18, but you need to also look for a door with good construction. The bottom seal, weather stripping, and the sealing joints, etc. are also some of the most important elements to look for when choosing your next garage door.

If you want to know what R-value should you look for in a new garage door, then contact our professionals at Promaster Garage Doors & Windows. Our skilled professionals will walk you through the garage door selection process, helping you choose the best and energy-efficient garage door for your space.
